AI basics & the words that matter

AI isn't magic, and it isn't only for engineers. Modern AI — especially the generative AI behind tools like ChatGPT and Claude — is software trained on enormous amounts of examples until it can recognize patterns and produce useful things: text, code, images, plans, answers.

You don't need a technical background to use it well. You need a working mental model and the vocabulary to think clearly about it. Here are the terms that unlock almost every other resource on this page.

ModelA system trained on data until it can make predictions or generate content.
LLMLarge Language Model — an AI trained on huge amounts of text to understand and produce language.
PromptThe instruction or question you give an AI. Your half of the conversation.
TokenThe small chunk of text — roughly a word-piece — that a model reads and writes.
TrainingThe process of teaching a model by showing it vast amounts of data.
InferenceWhen a finished model actually runs to produce an answer for you.
HallucinationWhen an AI states something false as confidently as something true.
AgentAn AI that can take actions and finish multi-step tasks — not just chat.
Context windowHow much text a model can hold in mind at once.
MultimodalA model that handles more than text — images, audio, even video.
02
Understand the engine

What language models actually are

At its core, a language model is a system trained to do one thing: predict the next chunk of text. Show it a huge slice of human writing and it learns the patterns — of grammar, of facts, of reasoning, of code. "Large" simply means billions of internal settings.

When you chat with one, it is repeatedly predicting what comes next, one token at a time. That deceptively simple mechanism, at enormous scale, is enough to explain, draft, translate and code. It also explains the weaknesses: a model can sound completely confident while being wrong. Understand the engine and you'll use it far better.

03
The highest-leverage skill

Prompting fundamentals

A prompt is just your instruction — but how you frame it changes the result dramatically. The same model gives a vague, generic answer or a sharp, genuinely useful one depending on what you ask for.

The fundamentals are learnable in an afternoon: be specific, give context, show an example of what "good" looks like, ask for a clear format, and let the model reason step by step. This is the single highest-leverage skill in all of AI — and the field is new enough that the best teachers are still giving it away free.

04
Build software without being a programmer

How to vibe code

"Vibe coding" — a term coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy in early 2025 — means building software by describing what you want in plain language and letting AI generate, run and refine the code. You guide; the AI types. It puts app-building within reach of people who never learned to program.

The workflow is simple: describe → generate → test → refine. One honest caveat — AI-generated code solves the immediate problem but can ignore structure and scale. It's excellent for prototypes, personal tools and learning; for anything serious and large, plan to have a developer review it.

05
Your tireless personal assistant

Organize your life with AI

Used well, AI is the personal assistant most people could never afford. It can turn a messy brain-dump into a clear plan, draft the email you've been avoiding, summarize a stack of documents, build a meal plan or a budget, prep you for a hard conversation, and keep your calendar honest.

The trick is to treat it like a capable assistant: tell it your situation, your real constraints, and what "done" looks like — then refine. Below are free tools and starting points; pair them with the prompting fundamentals in section 03.

06
Peak workflow

Productivity & workflow at peak levels

The real jump in productivity doesn't come from one clever prompt. It comes from building a workflow where AI handles the repeatable parts and you handle judgment.

A simple, powerful pattern: Research → Draft → Edit → Automate. Let the model gather the research and produce the first draft; you steer, correct and decide. Then automate the steps you find yourself repeating. The goal isn't to do everything faster — it's to spend your hours on the work only you can do.

07
Know the map

The AI tools landscape

New tools launch every week — but they fall into a handful of buckets. Assistants for thinking, writing and planning. Search engines that answer in plain language. Coding copilots. Creative generators for images, audio and video. Automation tools that wire it all together.

You don't need all of them. Pick one in each category that you'll actually use — almost every one has a free tier, so start there.

08
Competence includes the limits

Using AI safely & responsibly

AI is powerful and imperfect, and real competence means knowing both. Three habits keep you safe. Verify anything that matters — models can "hallucinate," stating false things with total confidence. Protect your privacy — never paste passwords, financial details, or other people's private information into AI tools. Stay honest — disclose AI's role where it counts, and watch for bias in what it produces.

None of this is a reason to avoid AI. It's the difference between using it like an amateur and using it like someone genuinely competent.

09
Why this is urgent

AI in the future

AI is moving from tool to teammate — "agentic" systems that complete multi-step work on their own. The job market already reflects it. According to Stanford's 2026 AI Index, AI skills now appear in 2.5% of all US job postings — up nearly 300% in a decade — demand for agentic-AI skills jumped over 280% in a single year, and early-career employment in the most AI-exposed roles has fallen sharply.

The pattern is consistent: AI rewards the people who can direct it and pressures those who can't. That isn't a reason for fear — it's a reason to act. Competence is the hedge, and the window is now. That is the entire reason Engage 2030 exists.

Questions

Before you dive in

Is everything on this page really free?

Yes. Every course, guide, video and certificate listed is free to access and free to complete. We only include resources with no required payment anywhere in the process. If something ever changes, we update the page.

I'm a total beginner. Where do I start?

Start at the top — section 01 for the vocabulary, then take Elements of AI. It assumes zero background, needs no coding, and gives you a free certificate at the end. From there, section 03 (prompting) is the highest-leverage thing you can learn.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Most of this page — and most of what makes a person genuinely "AI-competent" — involves no coding at all. Even vibe coding (section 04) is about describing what you want in plain language and letting AI handle the code.

How do I actually earn a certificate?

Pick any program in the Certificates section, create a free account, and finish the course. The credential is issued automatically — you can then add it to your résumé and LinkedIn.

How does this connect to Engage Academy and Philotic?

This page is the open front door — free resources to get anyone moving today. Engage Academy goes deeper with structured courses and hands-on projects, and Philotic is the AI you learn to operate. Resources here, depth in the Academy, real capability with Philotic.

Cost was the barrier. Not anymore.

Everything you need to become competent in AI is free and on this page. The only thing left is to begin — and to bring someone with you.
